A Brief History of
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro was established by legislative enactment on February 18, 1891, and opened its doors on October 5, 1892.
The institution came into being as a direct result of the efforts of Dr. Charles Duncan McIver on behalf of the education of women. To Dr. McIver, more than any other individual, the university owes its foundation. He became its first president and served until his death in 1906.
Since its founding, the institution’s name has been changed several times: 1891–1919—State Normal and Industrial College; 1919–1932—North Carolina College for Women; 1932–1963—the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina. In the 1963 General Assembly the name was changed to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and by the same Act the institution became co-educational. In the fall of 1964 the first class of male students was admitted. In 1972 the General Assembly in special session merged all state-supported institutions of higher education into the University of North Carolina without changing the names of each campus. Thus, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro is a member of the 17-campus university.
From a student body of 223 and a faculty of 15 in 1892, the University of North Carolinaat Greensboro has grown to a student body of 19,038 resident students—20% of whom are graduate students—and a total faculty of 1,138.
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro includes the following academic units: College of Arts and Sciences, Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and Economics, School of Education, School of Health and Human Sciences, Interdisciplinary College, Lloyd International Honors College, Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, School of Nursing, and College of Visual and Performing Arts. The university offers six bachelor’s degrees in 76 fields, master’s degrees in a wide variety of concentrations, and doctoral degrees in 28 areas of study.
The University Flag
As the university has evolved from the State Normal and Industrial School in 1891 to UNC Greensboro today, so has the University Flag. The flag bears the traditional colors of gold and white, which were first used in the Commencement ceremony of 1894, as well as navy, which was added as the third color in 1987. In 2018, the university completed a brand refresh with updates to its colors including new shades of navy and gold as well as adopting a fourth color, grey. In 2020, a revision of the University Flag was completed to include official university colors. The December 2020 Commencement marked the debut of this new flag. The University Seal, depicting the likeness of Minerva, appears on both sides of the flag.
The Academic Banners
The Academic Banners represent the constituent parts of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro: the Graduate School, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the six professional schools—the Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and Economics, the School of Education, the School of Health and Human Sciences, the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, the School of Nursing, and the College of Visual and Performing Arts. The designs are unique to this university; the colors have historical association with the respective academic disciplines. The banners are a memorial to Marguerite Norman Felton, teacher of chemistry at the university from 1956 to 1979.
Over the years, several generations of college and school banners have existed. The current banners made their Commencement debut at the May 2010 ceremony.
University Marshals
The Banner Bearers and escorts for all lines of march during Commencement are provided by the University Marshals, an academic honorary organization composed of full-time undergraduate students with academic averages of 3.65 or greater. These students may be recognized by the gold sashes that they wear during the ceremonies.
Academic Regalia
Academic costumes seem to have originated at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge over 650 years ago. The colors of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro are gold, white, and blue, with gold and white used in the hood.
Brian Hall
As President of Real Estate for Samet, Brian Hall works directly with local, national, and international clients to develop industrial projects beneficial and tailored to each client’s projected growth and operational strategy. His expertise includes 17 years of industrial and medical office development, including development of more than 5+ million square feet of facilities on over 2,000 acres. He is currently working on over one million square feet of space in multiple buildings across the Carolinas.
Hall earned his bachelor of arts in business administration from Mary Washington College and his master of business administration from UNC Greensboro’s Bryan School of Business and Economics. He began his career earning experience as a real estate broker before transitioning into a residential real estate developer role. In 2007, he joined Samet as an assistant pre-construction project manager and was later promoted to Director of Development in 2016. In his current position as President of Real Estate since 2022, Hall oversees all real estate operations and development initiatives for Samet. His ‘start to finish’ approach with clients has earned him a strong reputation of providing client-centered solutions with commitment and integrity. Hall is also well regarded in the professional real estate community as evident from his board appointments and frequent commercial real estate awards in the Triad.
Married to Amy Oliver Hall and raising three children, Hall’s commitment to family is a priority. Outside of work, he enjoys playing competitive soccer, serving his church community with his musical and leadership abilities, and spending time with his children.
Honorary Degrees
Randall R. Kaplan
Doctor of Laws
Randall R. Kaplan’s visionary leadership and philanthropy have had a transformative impact on UNC Greensboro.
His generosity and service have advanced learning, strengthened institutional excellence, and deepened public engagement, leaving an enduring legacy across the Triad, North Carolina, and beyond.
A Greensboro native, Kaplan graduated from Brown University in 1978 and earned a Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School, where he met his wife, the Honorable Kathy Manning.
After clerking on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and practicing law in Washington, D.C., Kaplan returned home in 1987 to lead Kay Chemical Company and now serves as Chief Executive Officer of Capsule Group, LLC, a private investment firm, and is the founder and a board member of Elm Street Technology.
Though not a UNCG alumnus, Kaplan has embraced UNCG as his own. A steadfast and enthusiastic Spartan supporter, his leadership has helped shape the University’s present and future.
His service includes the Bryan School Advisory Board; the UNCG Foundation Executive Committee, where he served as President and Vice President; the Students First Campaign Steering Committee; and the Investment Fund Committee. Kaplan joined the UNCG Board of Trustees in 2007 and served as Chair from 2009 to 2012, strengthening governance, infrastructure, and long‑term planning.
As Co‑Chair of the Light the Way Campaign, he helped the University raise more than $266 million to expand access, excellence, and impact at UNCG. In recognition of their extraordinary achievements, in 2022, Kaplan and fellow Co‑Chair, Susan Morris Safran ’77, received North Carolina’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
The Kaplan family’s legacy is visible across campus. Together with Kathy, he created Kaplan Commons on the west lawn of the Elliott University Center. His mother, Tobee Kaplan, donated millions to support health and wellness at UNCG, naming the Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness in honor of his father. Kaplan further advanced academic excellence by establishing the Randall R. Kaplan Distinguished Professorship in Innovation.
Beyond UNCG, Kaplan has supported economic development through service on the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina Board and the North Carolina State and the Local Fiscal Modernization Commission, and through the leadership of Progress North Carolina.
Kaplan’s commitment to public service reflects the values instilled by his parents, the late Leonard and Tobee Kaplan, pioneers in the Greensboro Jewish Philanthropic community.
Randall R. Kaplan’s remarkable legacy is one of vision, service, and enduring impact.
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro bestows upon him one of its highest recognitions, an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws.
Susan M. Safran
Doctor of Science
Susan Morris Safran’s extraordinary achievements have brought lasting distinction to UNC Greensboro and have improved lives across North Carolina and beyond. Her career spans years of leadership in health care, emergency training, and higher education.
Safran began her academic journey at UNCG as a business major before realizing her calling in nursing. She earned her nursing degree in 1977 at UNCG and went on to a distinguished career in critical care nursing and health care management at Wake Medical Center, Duke University Medical Center, and Rex Hospital. A lifelong learner, she also completed a master’s program at Duke University while working full-time and raising a family.
In 1988, Safran founded CPR Consultants, Inc., one of the nation’s first official American Heart Association Training Centers. By 2008, the company was training nearly 45,000 individuals annually in cardiopulmonary resuscitation – training proven to double or triple survival rates following cardiac arrest. She then led Less Stress Instructional Services, extending Advanced Cardiac Life Support training to thousands of emergency responders statewide. Her guidance helped shape emergency cardiac care protocols across North Carolina. In recognition of her advocacy and impact, she was named North Carolina Advocate of the Year.
Safran has been a devoted supporter of UNC Greensboro and the School of Nursing for nearly four decades. She was the first School of Nursing alumna to serve on the University’s Board of Trustees and chaired the board from 2014 to 2016. She chaired the Chancellor Search Committee and played a key role in advancing major initiatives, including the Union Square Campus partnership and the Nursing and Instructional Building, which opened in 2021.
With Randall Kaplan, Safran co‑chaired UNCG’s Light the Way Campaign, which raised more than $266 million from over 26,000 donors in support of access, excellence, and impact. She and her husband, Perry, established the Safran Distinguished Professorship in Nursing and multiple endowed scholarships, including funds supporting veteran‑connected nursing students and merit scholars. Through these substantial commitments, the couple’s generosity has expanded opportunities for hundreds of future health care professionals.
In recognition of her professional excellence and advocacy, Safran received the UNCG School of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award in 2019 and North Carolina’s Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2022.
Susan M. Safran’s impact and influence extend far beyond our campus, marked by innovation, public service, and a deep commitment to access and excellence. She took the lessons she learned at UNCG, built a thriving career, and used that success to improve the lives of multitudes.
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro bestows upon her one of its highest recognitions, an honorary degree of Doctor of Science.
